Holistic crystals: how to choose them by intention (guide from a therapist in Dubai)

Crystals are one of the oldest and most misunderstood tools of holistic care. They have been used for thousands of years in virtually every spiritual tradition on the planet — Egyptians, Sumerians, Chinese, Hindus, Indigenous Americans — and today they enjoy a second youth, somewhere between decorative, mystical and genuinely therapeutic. The important question isn’t “are they magical?” — it is how do you choose them, use them and care for them properly, and what do they really help with? In my consultation I use them daily as a complement to Reiki, chakra work and aura cleansing, and I see clear and consistent results. In this guide I explain, from my 10+ years of experience, the 10 essential crystals, how to choose yours according to what you’re living, and how to care for them so they keep working.

🌿 In 30 seconds

The essentials of holistic crystals

Crystals are minerals with an ordered atomic structure that have been used for thousands of years
as energetic, emotional and meditative support. They are chosen by intention (calm, protection,
abundance, clarity), by the chakra you want to work, or simply by felt affinity. They need
regular cleansing and charging to keep their effect.

  • How to choose yours: by intention, by chakra, by felt affinity — all three are valid
  • The 4 essentials to start with: clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, black tourmaline
  • How to cleanse them: running water, Himalayan salt, smoke (palo santo, sage), moonlight
  • How to charge them: full moon light, gentle sunlight (some not), conscious intention
  • How to use them in the day: pocket, pillow, jewellery, personal altar, meditation

What are crystals really in holistic therapy?

Crystals are natural minerals with an ordered, repeating atomic structure. This structure — invisible to the eye but measurable by X-ray diffraction — is what gives them their precise geometric shape, their colour and, according to holistic tradition, their specific vibrational signature. They aren’t “magical” objects in the magical sense of the word — they are minerals with real physical properties that the world’s spiritual traditions have observed and used for millennia for energy work.

The central idea of their therapeutic use is simple: each crystal has its own vibration that, in contact with the human energy field, resonates with certain frequencies and helps balance them. It’s the same logic that sustains chakra or Tibetan singing bowl work: we work with vibration, not chemistry.

What crystals ARE in my practice:

  • Energetic support tools complementary to Reiki, aromatherapy, massage
  • Sensory anchors that remind you of your intention day-to-day
  • Meditative companions that help deepen the practice
  • Self-care resources that are simple, accessible and durable

What crystals are NOT:

  • An alternative to medicine or psychological care when these are needed
  • “Magic potions” that solve structural problems without you doing anything
  • Promises of cure for serious illnesses
  • Objects whose power depends on price or rarity

As with all holistic tools: the crystal doesn’t do the work for you, it accompanies you while you do it.

How do crystals work? Between tradition and science

Here I need to be honest. Academic science has not validated the therapeutic use of crystals beyond the placebo effect and the effect on the nervous system of conscious contact with a beautiful object. That’s true and it’s worth saying clearly.

What is documented:

  • Crystals do have real piezoelectric properties (quartz is used in watches and electronic devices precisely because it emits stable vibration when pressure is applied)
  • Holding an object you associate with calm effectively lowers cortisol — this is basic psychology
  • Intention directed onto an object creates neurological anchors that do modify behaviour and emotional state
  • In meditative practices, an external focal point (crystal, candle, mantra) demonstrably facilitates concentration

My personal position, after a decade using them in consultation: I don’t need academic science to fully explain the mechanism to recognise what I see every day. Clients who sleep with selenite by the bed sleep better. Those who carry black tourmaline in their bag report less sensitivity to dense environments. Those who meditate with amethyst in hand deepen meditative states faster.

And at the same time: I never present crystals as a substitute for medical, psychological, or any other effective tool. They are a sensory and energetic complement, not a clinical treatment.

The 10 essential crystals in my consultation

After trying many, these are the 10 crystals I see appear again and again with consistent results. If you could only choose a few, start here.

1. Clear quartz — the universal amplifier

The most versatile crystal there is. It’s called “master” because it amplifies whatever intention you set with it and adapts to any chakra or energy work. It’s the first I recommend to beginners, and the one I use most in Reiki sessions.

  • For: mental clarity, intention amplification, spiritual connection
  • How to use: meditation with one in each hand, in the centre of a personal altar
  • Cleansing: any method (it’s very resistant)

2. Rose quartz — the heart crystal

The most popular and most recommended for the heart chakra. It softens, opens, repairs. I always recommend it in processes of emotional grief, separations, difficulty opening after wounds.

  • For: self-love, forgiveness, opening the heart, emotional healing
  • How to use: on the chest during meditation, under the pillow, in daily jewellery
  • Cleansing: running water, moonlight (sensitive to strong sun)

3. Amethyst — the guardian of rest

My favourite crystal for sleep. Calms the hyperactive mind, facilitates deep rest and connection with intuition. It is one of the few crystals I always recommend keeping by the bed.

  • For: insomnia, anxiety, intuition, meditation, third eye chakra work
  • How to use: by the bed, under the pillow, in meditation
  • Cleansing: running water, smoke (don’t expose to strong sun — loses colour)

4. Citrine — sun in stone

The crystal of yes. Associated with the solar plexus, it works with self-esteem, personal power, abundance. I recommend it to clients in processes of professional change, recovering confidence, leaving draining relationships.

  • For: self-esteem, abundance, vitality, clarity of purpose
  • How to use: in your pocket during the day, on your work desk
  • Cleansing: running water, gentle sun (citrine does tolerate sun)

5. Black tourmaline — the shield

The protector par excellence. If you’re a sensitive, empathic person, or work in energetically dense environments (healthcare, education, customer service, therapies), black tourmaline will accompany you very well.

  • For: energetic protection, grounding, dense environments, draining people
  • How to use: in your pocket when you go out, near the entrance door of home
  • Cleansing: running water, dry salt, smoke

6. Selenite — the cleanser

The “self-cleaning” crystal par excellence. It not only doesn’t need frequent cleansing — it cleanses other crystals placed nearby. I use it a lot in my consultation to keep the energetic space clean.

  • For: energetic cleansing of space, mental clarity, spiritual connection
  • How to use: in a special corner of the home, next to other crystals to cleanse them, in meditation
  • Cleansing: DO NOT wet (selenite dissolves), only smoke or moonlight

7. Black obsidian — the truth

The inner mirror. Brings to light what was hidden, helps process deep fears and shadow emotions. It is a powerful crystal — I don’t recommend it for absolute beginners, but rather for people with some spiritual practice.

  • For: shadow work, processing deep fears, grounding
  • How to use: in specific meditation, not to carry continuously
  • Cleansing: running water, smoke

8. Red jasper — the earth

The crystal of grounding. Associated with the root chakra, it works with connection to the body, the sense of basic safety, vital force. Especially useful for expatriate women in Dubai who need to rebuild their roots far from their land of origin.

  • For: grounding, physical vitality, safety, expatriation
  • How to use: in your pocket, near your feet during meditation
  • Cleansing: running water, earth, salt

9. Green aventurine — soft luck

The crystal of new opportunities. It works with heart opening but also with the flow of abundance, especially when there are blocks from fear or self-demand.

  • For: new opportunities, soft luck, heart chakra, opening
  • How to use: in your left pocket, on your desk
  • Cleansing: running water, moonlight

10. Lapis lazuli — inner truth

The crystal of authentic expression. Associated with the throat chakra, it works with the ability to speak your truth, especially in situations where you’ve been silent for a long time.

  • For: authentic expression, intuition, inner wisdom
  • How to use: in necklaces, in meditation touching the throat
  • Cleansing: smoke, moonlight (not strong sun, not prolonged saltwater)

How to choose your crystal by intention

There are three valid ways to choose a crystal — all correct, not mutually exclusive:

By specific intention

Identify what you need to work on and choose the corresponding crystal:

  • Calming the mind / sleeping better → amethyst
  • Opening the heart / healing grief → rose quartz
  • Recovering confidence / self-esteem → citrine
  • Energetic protection → black tourmaline
  • Cleansing the space / clarity → selenite
  • Grounding / feeling the body → red jasper
  • Expressing your truth → lapis lazuli
  • Amplifying any intention → clear quartz

By chakra you want to work

If you know the 7 chakras and know which is most imbalanced in you, choose by colour and resonance:

  • Root (red): red jasper, hematite, obsidian
  • Sacral (orange): carnelian, orange agate
  • Solar plexus (yellow): citrine, tiger’s eye
  • Heart (green/pink): rose quartz, green aventurine
  • Throat (blue): lapis lazuli, blue lace agate, sodalite
  • Third eye (indigo): amethyst, lapis lazuli
  • Crown (violet/white): clear quartz, selenite, light amethyst

By felt affinity

The oldest and most underrated way: go to a physical shop, look at the crystals, and choose the one that “calls you”. Not the most expensive or the most beautiful — the one that when you hold it gives you a different sensation. This is how healers have chosen crystals for thousands of years. Trust your sensation.

My recommendation for someone starting: combine all three. Identify an intention, choose the crystal by corresponding chakra, but go to a physical shop to pick it up — don’t buy it online the first time.

How to cleanse and charge your crystals

Crystals absorb energetic charge from the environment and from the people they are in contact with. That’s why they need regular cleansing to keep working. It’s one of the most forgotten steps and the reason many people say “my crystal doesn’t do anything anymore”.

Cleansing methods

  • Cold running water: 30 seconds under the tap, mentally asking it to take the charge away. Suitable for almost all crystals — exceptions: selenite (dissolves), prolonged lapis lazuli and malachite (lose lustre), pyrite (oxidises)
  • Dry Himalayan salt: bury the crystal in salt for 24 hours. Suitable for almost all
  • Smoke (palo santo, white sage, incense): pass the crystal through the smoke for a few seconds. Suitable for all
  • Full moonlight: leave crystals under the full moon’s light all night. Suitable for all
  • Other crystals (selenite, quartz cluster): place the crystal to be cleansed next to selenite or on a quartz cluster for a few hours

Charging methods

Cleansing removes negative charge; charging adds positive vibration.

  • Full moon (most recommended): leave the crystal at a window or outdoors during the full moon night
  • Gentle sun (only some crystals): citrine, carnelian, tiger’s eye tolerate sun. DO NOT expose to sun: amethyst, rose quartz, fluorite (lose colour)
  • Conscious intention: hold the crystal in your hands, breathe deeply, mentally say what you want to use it for
  • Near a quartz cluster or selenite: they charge other crystals through contact

Frequency

As a general rule:

  • Crystal you carry daily: cleanse once a week, charge once a month
  • Crystal on a personal altar: cleanse and charge with each full moon
  • Protection crystal (tourmaline, obsidian): cleanse twice a week — they absorb a lot

How to use crystals in your day-to-day

Crystals don’t need to be a complicated ritual. The most effective ways to use them are simple and consistent:

In your pocket

Carrying a crystal in your pocket during the day. By touching it throughout the day, you reactivate the intention you set with it. Especially useful for calm crystals (amethyst), protection (tourmaline) or confidence (citrine).

By the bed

Selenite and amethyst on the bedside table improve sleep quality very consistently. It’s one of the habits I most recommend to clients with insomnia.

As jewellery

Rings, pendants, bracelets with crystals are very effective precisely because they are in continuous contact with the skin. Only thing: remember to cleanse them — crystal jewellery also gets charged.

In meditation

Holding a crystal in your hand, or placing one on the chakra you’re working, deepens the meditative practice very clearly. Amethyst on the forehead, rose quartz on the chest, citrine on the solar plexus — it works.

Personal altar

Creating a small space at home with your crystals, a candle, a meaningful image. 5 minutes a day next to this space create a daily anchor of presence that changes many things.

In the workspace

Selenite on the desk to keep the space clear, black tourmaline near the computer, citrine for professional abundance. Crystals at work are completely normal and very useful.

How I work with crystals in my consultation

In my Arabian Ranches studio, crystals are structural part of many sessions:

  • During Reiki: I place crystals on or near the chakras based on what the reading indicated. Rose quartz on the heart, amethyst on the third eye, citrine on the solar plexus.
  • At the closing of sessions: clients who come for deep processes often “choose” a crystal at the end, take it home to sustain the work between sessions.
  • For aura cleansing: black tourmaline and selenite are protagonists in this work.
  • For clients in grief or strong transitions: I prepare a small personal “kit” of 3-4 specific crystals for the moment they are living, with care instructions.
  • For guided meditation: crystals on key points of the body to deepen.

Frequently asked questions about holistic crystals

How much do crystals cost and which are recommended to start?

To start you don’t need to spend much. A basic kit of 4 crystals (clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, black tourmaline) in 2-3 cm polished stones costs between USD 20 and 50 at a serious metaphysical shop. Prices rise significantly with size, quality and rarity, but to start, small polished stones work perfectly.

Can I gift my crystals or do they have to be bought by me?

Crystals can be given and received without problem. What matters is cleansing them upon receiving to remove the previous energetic charge. A crystal gifted with loving intention can be more powerful than one bought without thought.

Do fake or artificial crystals work?

No. Artificial crystals (dyed glass, resins, synthetic “crystals” sold in tourist markets) don’t have real mineral structure and therefore don’t have vibrational properties. For them to work, they must be real natural minerals — they don’t need to be expensive, but they do need to be authentic.

Can my cat/dog be around crystals?

Yes, no problem. Some animals even choose crystals: cats curling up next to selenite, dogs feeling calmer near a quartz cluster. But don’t leave small crystals within reach of pets that could swallow them.

Can crystals make something worse?

Only in one sense: if you carry a very intense crystal (black obsidian, moldavite, larimar) without being prepared for the deep work it activates, you can notice emotions surfacing suddenly or very vivid dreams. If that happens, don’t panic — put the crystal away for a few days and return to it gradually, or work with softer crystals (rose quartz, amethyst) first.

How long do crystals last?

A lifetime if you care for them well. Crystals have been forming inside the earth for millions of years and are extraordinarily durable. They can pass from generation to generation. If a crystal breaks, it usually means it fulfilled its function — thank it, bury the pieces in earth, and choose another when you’re ready.

The chakras and the energy bodies

The 7 main chakras

Chakras are the body’s energy centres — wheels of energy located along the spine that regulate different dimensions of our life:

  • Muladhara (root) — base of the spine. Safety, grounding, connection with the earth.
  • Svadhisthana (sacral) — below the navel. Creativity, sensuality, pleasure.
  • Manipura (solar plexus) — above the navel. Personal power, will, confidence.
  • Anahata (heart) — centre of the chest. Love, compassion, emotional openness.
  • Vishuddha (throat) — throat. Communication, expression, personal truth.
  • Ajna (third eye) — between the eyebrows. Intuition, inner wisdom, subtle perception.
  • Sahasrara (crown) — crown of the head. Spirituality, connection with the divine, higher consciousness.

The five energy bodies

We are beings made up of several interrelated layers or subtle bodies:

  • Physical body — the material vehicle we inhabit.
  • Energy (or etheric) body — the energetic network through which prana, the vital energy, flows.
  • Emotional body — where feelings and affective reactions reside.
  • Mental body — thoughts, beliefs, mental processes.
  • Spiritual body — the connection with the transcendent and our deepest essence.

In every session we work across all these planes at once, because an imbalance in one usually reflects in the others.
