Holistic care after summer: how to recover from the heat, travel and return to routine (Dubai)

Few cities demand as much from the body during summer as Dubai. Three months of extreme heat (45-50°C), constant 24/7 air conditioning, disguised chronic dehydration, sleep disruption and, for many residents, long holiday trips with 6-8 hour jet lag leave the body in August with a very specific sensation: the system is exhausted even though you “rested” in July. This isn’t coincidence — it’s the expected physiological response to a trimester that puts the organism into constant survival mode. In this article, drawn from my 10+ years accompanying Dubai residents through this same transition each August, I explain what happens to the body after summer, which key treatments help most, a 1-week transition ritual, and how to return to routine without falling into burnout.

🌿 In 30 seconds

The essentials of a post-summer reset

After a Dubai summer, the body usually has: deep cellular dehydration, loaded lymphatic system,
damaged skin and mucosa, disrupted sleep, low vitality. An effective reset combines lymphatic
drainage, deep hydration (internal and cutaneous), restorative aromatherapy, and gradual return
to routine with gentle decompression rituals.

  • Realistic recovery time: 2-3 weeks to feel like yourself again
  • Key treatment 1: manual lymphatic drainage (system decongestion)
  • Key treatment 2: holistic massage with restorative oils
  • At home: deep hydration, weekly holistic bath, daily aromatherapy, gradual return
  • Common mistakes: going back to 100% on day one, ignoring jet lag, “compensating” with extreme exercise

Why summer (especially in Dubai) leaves a mark

Summer in Dubai isn’t comparable to European summer. It’s an extreme climatic state sustained over 3 months, with three specific physical mechanisms that accumulatively affect the body:

1. Constant extreme heat (45-50°C)

The body spends an enormous amount of energy on thermoregulation. Even though you’re indoors with air conditioning, brief transit moments (car, terrace, garden) generate continuous thermal stress. Cortisol rises, the nervous system enters “survival” mode, sleep is altered.

2. 24/7 air conditioning

Here lies the most underrated effect. Air conditioning dehydrates mucous membranes, dries skin, alters respiratory microbiota and, above all, breaks the body’s contact with its natural thermal environment. Your body is never really “comfortable” — it’s at an artificial temperature where the vasomotor system isn’t exercised. Result: more sluggish circulation, more stagnant lymphatic system.

3. Disguised chronic dehydration

Even if you drink water, in this climate water loss far exceeds what it seems. Many women reach August with deep cellular dehydration without knowing it: dull skin, chronic fatigue, recurrent headaches, constipation, dry mucosa. Post-summer hydration isn’t just “drinking more” — it’s deep rehydration with minerals.

4. Long travel (for those who travel)

Many residents spend part of summer in Europe, the Americas or Asia. 6-9 hour jet lag + climate change + food difference + different social rhythms = deep desynchronisation that takes the body 2-3 weeks to resettle on return.

5. Mediterranean nightlife

Summer = 10pm dinners, late sleep, more wine. It’s fun but breaks the circadian rhythms we had. Melatonin is delayed, sleep quality drops, digestive system gets overloaded.

6. Accumulated sun exposure

Even if you take care, summer sun accumulates in the skin: spots, loss of elasticity, cutaneous dehydration, microinflammation. September is the ideal month to start repairing what’s been done.

7. Social and mental saturation

Social summer in Dubai = beach clubs, brunches, dinners, events, family visits. There’s no time for “doing nothing”. Mental saturation reaches August exhausted, and returning to routine without prior reset becomes September burnout.

7 physical effects I see in consultation in August-September

After 5 years receiving clients during this period in Dubai, the patterns are very clear:

  1. Loaded lymphatic system: heavy legs, persistent swelling, “I’m not draining” sensation
  2. Dull and sensitive skin: rough texture, microinflammation, intolerance to products that worked before
  3. Cervical and jaw tension: from accumulated cortisol of heat + AC changes
  4. Insomnia or superficial sleep: circadian rhythms broken by travel or social life
  5. Slow digestion: dietary changes + dehydration + alcohol
  6. “End of party” mood drop: after the summer euphoria, a grey sensation on returning
  7. Resistance to returning to routine: difficulty resuming discipline, exercise, focus — and self-demand that makes everything worse

Good news: with a clear 2-3 week protocol, all this moves significantly.

1-week transition ritual

This is the structure I recommend to clients returning after summer. 7 days to reconnect before “going back to everything”.

Days 1-2: stop and sleep

  • Accept that the body needs rest, not “tuning up”
  • Sleep 9 hours minimum if you can — that’s the 3-4 hours of accumulated summer deficit
  • No intense exercise, no heavy social agenda
  • Deep hydration: 2.5L water + natural electrolytes (lemon + pinch of Himalayan salt)
  • Soft meals: broth, soup, cooked vegetables. Raw and very cold diet isn’t ideal when the digestive system is tired

Days 3-4: gentle clearing

  • 30 min walk outdoors (early morning, before 8am)
  • Holistic bath with Epsom salt and restorative oils (see below)
  • Journal: write 15 minutes about how summer was and what you want to take into this new cycle
  • Reduce screens especially at night
  • Early dinners (before 8pm) to readjust circadian rhythms

Days 5-6: key treatments

  • Manual lymphatic drainage (this week or next)
  • Holistic massage with restorative oils
  • Intensive skin hydration with gentle products
  • Return to gentle exercise: yoga, pilates, walking. No running or HIIT yet

Day 7: return with intention

  • Reorganise agenda with clear priorities (don’t accept everything that comes)
  • Plan 1 month of sustainable routine, not “maximum performance from Monday”
  • Commit to 1 key habit to sustain (1 weekly bath, 1 daily walk, 10 min meditation)

Key treatments: why and which one for you

Depending on how you arrive, three treatments contribute most in this period. They often combine.

1. Manual lymphatic drainage

The star post-summer treatment. The lymphatic system loads up during months of heat + AC + travel + different food. Manual lymphatic drainage does exactly what the name says: moves stagnant lymph, decongests legs, abdomen, arms, face. Clients usually report the next day:

  • Lighter legs
  • Less puffy face
  • Better sleep that night (the most surprising)
  • Sensation of “having emptied something”

Recommended frequency: 1-2 sessions in the first two weeks post-summer. For some, 3-4 consecutive sessions (every 5-7 days) if the load is large.

2. Holistic massage

If you come with cervical tension, blocked jaw, hardened shoulders from months of accumulated cortisol, holistic massage is the best first intervention. It’s not intense sports massage — it’s sustained massage, deep where needed, gentle elsewhere, with warm oils chosen for your case.

Frequency: 1 initial session. If the tension is very chronic, 2-3 fortnightly sessions.

3. Reiki + Tibetan bowl (for deep nervous system reset)

If what you feel is more general exhaustion, background anxiety, sense of not landing, a combined Reiki + Tibetan bowl session is what brings the deepest calm. Ideal to close the first transition week.

Aromatherapy for post-summer reset

Some oils are particularly useful in this period:

Oils for skin damaged by sun and AC

  • Fine lavender: gentle cellular repair
  • Rosehip (as base oil): repairing oil par excellence
  • Italian helichrysum: for microscars and sun spots (potent)
  • Rose geranium: general skin balance
  • Roman chamomile: inflamed or reactive skin

Repairing face formula: 30 ml rosehip + 4 drops lavender + 2 drops helichrysum + 2 drops rose geranium. Apply at night after cleansing, 2-3 drops gently massaged.

Oils for drainage and heavy legs

  • Cypress: circulatory drainage
  • Peppermint: immediate cooling effect (careful with the dose)
  • Lemon: gentle hepatic drainage
  • Atlas cedar: lymphatic drainage

Legs formula: 30 ml sweet almond + 8 drops cypress + 4 drops cedar + 2 drops peppermint. Apply twice a day with upward movements (ankle to knee, knee to hip).

Oils for emotional reset

  • Bergamot: anti-mood-drop
  • Sweet orange: quiet joy
  • Sandalwood: grounding
  • Lavender: general balance

Pocket roll-on: 10 ml jojoba + 3 drops bergamot + 2 sandalwood + 2 lavender. Apply on wrists and solar plexus when you notice “I don’t want to go back”.

Some of my favourite essential oils for post-summer reset: lavender, cypress, Italian helichrysum, bergamot, sandalwood and rose geranium. Each with a different role in recovery.

Restorative holistic bath (1 per week, for 3 weeks)

A specific version of the holistic bath for this period:

  • 400 g Epsom salt (high magnesium dose for muscles and sleep)
  • 100 g natural sea salt (energetic cleansing of summer)
  • 8 drops lavender + 3 drops rose geranium + 2 drops mandarin (mixed first in 1 tablespoon vegetable oil)
  • Dried lavender and chamomile in a pouch
  • 38°C, 30 minutes
  • After: chamomile + rosemary infusion (digestive + restorative)
  • Intention: “I thank summer for what was lived, I open space for this new cycle”

Mental reset: how to return to routine without burning out

The physical part is only half. The other half is the nervous system and mind:

1. Don’t go back to “100% mode” on day one

The most common mistake. September Monday = the most underrated day of the year in Dubai. Program the first week at 60-70% of your normal capacity. The body will thank you all month.

2. Reorder your agenda with real priorities

Summer = social chaos. September = opportunity to consciously decide what enters your agenda and what doesn’t. This is the best time of year to say no to commitments you were dragging from the previous year.

3. Identify an emotional layer to release

Often, the “strange” thing you feel post-summer isn’t physical — it’s emotional. You spent time with family, made trips, saw people. What emerged that needs to be processed? A Reiki session or work with repressed emotions in September is very powerful.

4. Drastically reduce alcohol and sugar for 2-3 weeks

The body asks for it and you know it. It’s not forever — it’s to reset.

5. Return gradually to exercise

Don’t start Monday with 1h of fitness. Start with 30 min walking + 20 min yoga for 1 week. The second week, increase slightly. The third, you’re back at your normal rhythm.

6. Decide ONE new habit (just one)

September is psychologically the “real January” for many women. Choose ONE habit you want to sustain all autumn/winter: 1 weekly bath, 10 min daily meditation, 1 monthly holistic session. More than one = you’ll abandon all.

My “post-summer reset” studio protocol

For clients who want structured work on return, I offer a package of 3 sessions in 3 weeks:

Deep decongestion of the lymphatic system. You leave the studio with a clear sense of “having lightened”. Recommendations for hydration at home.

Personalised warm oils, pressure adapted to your body, focus on specific summer tension (cervicals, jaw, shoulders, lumbar). Includes gentle facial work.

Deep nervous system reset, emotional integration of summer, cycle closing. The session most clients describe as “what I needed to feel myself again”.

Frequently asked questions about post-summer care

Do I need drainage if I don’t have swollen legs?

Probably yes. Drainage isn’t only for visible swelling — it acts on the entire lymphatic system, including internal decongestion that improves energy, sleep and general sensation. In Dubai summer, almost all lymphatic systems are loaded even if not visible.

How long does the body take to “return” after travel?

For 6-9 hour jet lag: the usual rule is 1 day per hour of difference — but in tired bodies, can be double. Be generous with yourself. Don’t schedule important decisions the first week.

Is an extreme detox in September a good idea?

No. Extreme detox with tired body = more stress on the system. What works is simplifying eating (less alcohol, less sugar, more cooked vegetables, regular meal times) for 2-3 weeks. That’s enough detox for this stage.

When is the first treatment best on return?

3-5 days after being back. First allow some rest, better hydration, and start of circadian readjustment. A session the day after arrival isn’t optimal because the body hasn’t landed yet.
